rainy day

I knew that it would be rainy today so I definitely needed to get my workout in this morning. Woke up bright & early at 5am. My friend Barbie decided she will do the tri with me & we go to the same gym (clutch!) so she came with me today. I Swam laps for about 15 min, then jogged/walked for 30 min. I couldn't believe how sore my legs still are from lifting yesterday! Even though I felt like lunges were my only lower body exercise, they KILLED me. I am having trouble sitting, standing up, and squatting down (all major parts of my work as a physical therapist). I have to work all weekend and so far it seems like it will be a busy one. Im hoping to sneak in maybe a workout on sunday afternoon.

I've been looking for advice on triathlon wear. I kind of like the idea of a sport skirt (I think I would hate running in a compression tri short, but who knows!) They have a bunch at Skirt Sports , which was recomended to me by a trainer at the gym. A fellow blogger Lindsey (Adventures of a big kid) recommended  wearing a normal swimsuit with sportsbra (I was HOPING someone would say that, I most certainly can't go without a bra!), and tri shorts & tank from Danskin (they have some cute skorts too).

I'm already getting nervous about the transitions and doing one exercise after another, but I'm so excited for the challenge! It's giving me the motivation to eat healthier and stay on track, and I'm honestly looking forward to my workouts!

Hi Stephanie, I saw your blog on the WW boards and I'm doing my first sprint tri this Sunday. I'll let you know about the outfit that would be best. I have a wetsuit but I'm going tomorrow AM to check the water temp. I plan to either wear my bathing suit with a sports bra under it or if I end up with the wetsuit then just a sports bra and bikini bottom. At the transition I plan to wear compression shorts so they don't chafe if I'm wet. I'm going to throw on a wicking t-shirt too.
I can let you know! When is yours?

The transitions can be as easy or as hard as you make them. It really depends on the amount of equipment you have for your bike, regarding cycling shoes with clips, etc. If that's the case the transition from swim to bike and then from bike to run is a little more complicated. If you are like me and use the same shoes for biking as running you skip one less step in the last transition. Have all of your stuff laid out at the transition sight. It helps to have your bike helmet laid upside down so the part your head goes in is facing you and easy to put on. Layer your stuff with shoes (socks if you choose to wear them) first followed by your helmet. You wouldn't think it but it's easy to forget your helmet for the bike section when you are rushing around and its frowned upon in all races. The more you practice preparing your transition area the better you will be come race day.

Oh, if you are still super nervous and have lots of unanswered questions there are a few great sites online with forums. Also, my "bible" for training during my first triathlon was "Slow Fat Triathlete" It's a book by a woman who started training for triathlons to lose weight. All sorts of pointers and tips from a real person and very entertaining.

I just finished my first tri today and told you I would get back to you on what I wore and if it worked.
First, make a packing list the day before and check it a bunch of times. When you get to your transition spot, make sure your shoes are covered with your clothes and then your helmet because wet wetsuits can make for some damp shoes.
I wore a sports bra, bathing suit and wetsuit for the swim. I also wore my swimcap (which was the same color as the ones they gave out- annoying and made me hard to spot) and goggles. I read somewhere to put your goggles under your cap in case they get kicked off, you won't lose them in the water (I couldn't see far at all).
At the transition area, have a small towel (and larger if you want) for your feet, I put on my tanktop (with number pinned on), compression shorts, socks/shoes and I put on my little belt that holds my ipod.
Start ride. Try to drink on the ride (and eat if you bring gels or jellybeans, etc). I didn't drink enough.
Jump off bike, hang it up, start running. I was really thirsty at this point and wish I had my water belt or bottle.
ENJOY! I loved it and want to do another.
