Sparkly Soul Review & Giveaway!

On my girls weekend away for the Divas Half Marathon in Long Island, I stumbled across a new athletic headband. I was originally eyeballing some sweatybands, but decided to check around the expo first & see what else was available. Then I saw Sparkly Soul....
All Sparkles.
Swoon.

What did I notice first?
These headbands were elastic the entire way around, where most athletic headbands only have a small elastic piece.
They are also non-slip the entire way around, where most other companies are NOT no-slip where the elastic is.
There is sparkle & color the whole way around, most places have no design or color where that elastic is in the back (boring when your hair is up!).

Shelley & I tried them on, and we were sold! We bought them to wear for the Divas Half. I went with a wide pink band to go with my new running skirt.
post race with my Sparkly band still in place

After testing it out for 13.1 miles, I just had to get in touch with the ladies at Sparkly Soul & tell them how much I LOVED their headband. I only had to do a minor adjustment once, and loved that it was a thick sparkle band. The band felt more comfortable & secure to me being elastic all the way around.

Sparkly Soul was started by a Marathoner & Triathlete that wanted a headband to stay in place & look fabulous. I can 100% say, that these do both! The fabulous ladies at Sparkly Soul sent me a couple more bands to try out...

Black sparkle wide...
thin red sparkle

I'll definitely be wearing one for tomorrow's race in Hartford!
Do you want to wear some too? Sparkly Soul has gifted one reader a wide black & thin red headband!

Divas Half Marathon Recap!

Shelley and I were wicked pumped for a girls weekend!!
We left friday afternoon on the drive for Long Island from western mass, and hit traffic. Yuck. Even yuckier? We were convinced we got stuck behind Derek Jeter.
We wanted to run him down, but instead just wished the Tigers good luck to kick their Yankee butts!!

After check in, we headed out to dinner at Cheesecake Factory. Did you know they have a new skinnylicious menu? They have all the calories listed out & have created menu items that are delicious and healthy.
I started with a pomegranate mojito (not on the skinny menu), then we shared a salmon spring roll appetizer and I had a pear & gorgonzola salad with grilled chicken. We ended our first night of girls weekend relaxing and watching movies at the hotel.

Saturday morning we made a trip to our favorite breakfast spot (PANERA Obviously!!), then headed to the Race Expo. Directions to the exact location were a little lacking, but we followed a car covered in running bumper stickers and eventually found it.
The expo was a little small, but there were still a few great booths. We picked up our bibs and took some opportunities to pose for photos.

I found a great company called Sparkly Soul who makes fabulous athletic headbands. I made sure to buy one to wear for the race and loved it (Review & giveaway to follow!). I browsed a few other booths, but didn't spend a fortune (what a first!). Next we headed for a shopping extravaganza at the mall. I spent too much at Sephora, Anthropologie, and my new favorite lululemon. The lululemon tank I bought to wear for the race, but I left lusting after the full tilt zip up and their pleated skirts.

Back at the hotel, we relaxed with Starbucks and did a dress rehearsal of our running outfits. I went with my new running skirt, the lululemon tank, my Zensah sleeves, arm sleeves and new sparkly soul headband!

We got takeaway from California Pizza Kitchen for dinner, and after a scary, anxiety ridden trip to Walmart (does that store make anyone else anxious?), we settled in to watch He's Just Not That Into You.

We woke up at 6:15 to get ready for the shuttle pick up at 7:20. Breakfast, getting dressed, filling bottles with water & Nuun, packing snacks, and getting pumped up. We got to the start shortly before 8 & were soooo glad to have picked the last shuttle time. The porta-potty lines were a million miles long and there was not much else going on. They did have self seeded corrals, and we headed to the 10:01-11 min mile corral.
Waiting for the start!

We started off dodging and weaving around slowpokes. There is nothing I hate more in a race than slow people walking in the first mile, clogging the traffic! It bothers me so much that these people won't start further back to allow quicker people to get by first. I also cannot stand people that don't pull over to walk, or check behind them when they stop to avoid a pile up. I practically plowed over several people because of their inconsiderate stopping.

Shelley really wanted to go for a PR, but I told her we also had to run smart. We had to stay strong for our speedwork and tempo runs this week. We had to keep soreness at bay for the Hartford Half in 2 weeks. But, I also wanted to stay with Shelley, only she was going at a good clip. Our first mile was 10:34, then mile 2 started at 10:15, until I told Shelley we had to slow down. Most of our miles were around 10:30ish for the first 8 or so. My stupid Garmin is not working right now, so I can't see official stats.

A lot of the course was small hills, and parts had slanted roads. The hills and slanted roads started killing my right knee. At mile 8, I told Shelley that I would have her go ahead at 8.5. Then luckily, my knee loosened up and started feeling better. I made it to mile 10 with Shelley, but I wanted to be smart. The Marathon is the goal, and I don't want an injury to complicate things.

A funny house I saw with fake people doing work on it!
The last 3.1 miles, I only walked 3 times, and just slowed the pace down to make my knee happy. Less than a mile from the finish there was an out and back where I saw Shelley!
Middle in the pink!
Then we hit a tiara & feather boa station, which was fun & uplifting, but the boa was sticky and super annoying around my neck. We finished the race through beautiful Eisenhower park, by a golf course, and a good size crowd to the finish! Then I was greeted by a welcome sight...
firefighters!
Firefighters ready to give me my medal! I bothered a random girl to take my picture, then shortly after found Shelley. I grabbed some champagne & my rose, and took some quick shots...

Then we waited in line to have more firefighter pictures taken...

We grabbed some yummy food, bananas, bagel, luna bar, and tart cherry juice. I saved some for later, and we headed out to the lawn to stretch and relax for a few.  It was short lived, since we had to head back to the hotel to check out.

A fun course, that seemed to fly by. My 7th Half Marathon Completed!
2:24:20
1377/2624 overall
247/426 women 25-29

I'm back from a Diva Weekend!

I can't wait to recap the Diva Half for you... I had a blast!
HUGE medal & Double fisting the champagne!

And despite a twingy knee at mile 8, the race rocked, and so did my time. I ended up with my second best half marathon time at 2:24:20!

This morning, I did make it to bootcamp, but it was a half-assed effort. My knee was keeping me from jumping or lunging too far. I'm rocking my Zensah calf compression sleeves at work, and its feeling a lot better. Unfortunately, I seemed to have misplaced my 110% play harder knee sleeve, which would feel amazing right now with its slide in ice packs.

After last weeks crappy attempt at healthy eating, I am working hard to commit myself to staying on track. The fact that I finally got my weight watchers e-tools working again after a few weeks without should help. I am vowing to track all week, get my workouts in, and stay in control with this weight loss plan. Please hold me accountable!!

The Hartford Half is in less than 2 weeks, and I want to be feeling good for that race. I have a good race crew of friends for Hartford (close to home, and a fun time). My mom, Kevin & my brother's girlfriend are doing the 5K, myself, Shelley, and my friends A & speedy trooper are doing the half, and my brother is doing the full! Couple that with a couple bloggers I know... Kari @ Running Ricig is doing the full, and Kristin @ Bigger Girls Can Run Too is running the Half. It should be a fun day, as long as the weather holds up. Anyone else coming to Hartford?

Three Things Thursday!

1. What is the deal with Biggest Loser? I am a HUGE Jillian Michaels fan, and was devastated when she announced her leave from Biggest Loser. I always loved watching Jill with the contestants, she is amazing. The new guy isn't bad, but Anna Kournikova is horrible. She is boring, not passionate, and to top it off not really helping her team lose the pounds. Thankfully, theres rumors that she won't return(HERE).

2. My nutrition has been crap this week, and I'm hoping that admitting it will help me get past it. I went crazy and bought Pumpkin ice cream, delish. Of course it was buy one get one free. I may have to toss them in the garbage. I missed my run wednesday, and made it back to bootcamp, but not without pulling my rhomboids. Now I'm heating my back and watching Parks & Rec & hoping it will diappear after a good nights sleep and some muscle relaxers.

3.  I'm leaving tomorrow for Long Island for the Divas Half Marathon!
I'm pumped to get all dolled up (crossing my fingers to find a fabulous tutu at the expo), and finishing with an awaiting treat of champagne & bling from a sexy fireman. I can't wait to come back & share the details. I know I won't run a great race, but I keep reminding myself that the goal is Disney! Sunday's run is only 9 miles on the schedule, so the extra 4.1 is a bonus. I may subtract from my 7 I missed and do 3 or so tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Week One Success = Treats at the Big E!

So, week 1 of my training for my very first marathon is completed! Not all the workouts went as I would have hoped, and my nutrition wasn't the best, but overall I'll call it a success. Here's a recap....

Monday- OFF
Tuesday- 1 hour bootcamp, 20 mile ride in 1:40. I got to go riding in the rain with the Green Girl!
Wednesday - Speedwork day: 3x1600m @ 6.4mph with 1 min rest intervals. My legs felt heavy & sore, but I plunged through with only a couple small rests on the last one!
Thursday - 1 hour bootcamp
Friday - Tempo day: 2 easy, 2 ST, 2 easy. Last 2 miles were definitely rough. My legs were wicked sore still.
Saturday- 15.76 ride in 1:15. A buggy, muggy ride with Kevin. Pretty much I wished we had stayed home.
Sunday- Long run 8.21 miles in 1:38. Rough run overall. My legs were heavy, my breathing short, and I just wanted to be done, but my body didn't want to go. I let Shelley go ahead the last 1.5 miles, and I struggled to the car with a million walk breaks.

Nutrition- Overall, not horrible. Biggest problem is that its fall, which means that my favorite beers are in limited supply. Which obviously means we have bought several cases and I'm enjoying 1 or 2 almost every night. I HAVE to stop this.

Today we went to the Big E, ever hear of it?
Pretty much its New England's biggest fair, and we had to go!
I managed my food smartly with a corn on the cob from the New Hampshire building, organic flatbread pizza from American Flatbread in Vermont, Sam Oktoberfest, Opa Opa Oktoberfest, and my favorite, the mini cinnamon donuts!
My donuts and my many purchases!
I'm also a huge sucker for those 'as seen on TV' kind of products. I ended up with a ceramic curling iron,  floor mats for the house, back cushion for my car, and an amazing grater. Pretty excited to curl my hair tomorrow!

Like the pink zebra? Don't mind my crazy eyes!
Since next weekend is the Diva Half Marathon, I'm going to get my key runs in on monday and wednesday, so I don't run 7 miles 2 days before the half. Shelley and I are excited for a long girls weekend away in Long Island!

Anyone else racing at the Diva Half in Long Island?
Anyone know any fun things to do in Long Island?

Let the Race Planning Begin

I have not been great the rest of this week.

Wednesday night I skipped my group ride, I was wicked tired! This morning I could barely drag my but out of bed at 6:30am, never mind the initial 4:45am setting I had it on for my morning run. I dragged through the day, hoping I would have enough energy for a run after work, but no way. I am beat. This bootcamp thing sure wears me out. Wears me out so much that I can't seem to get my key workout #2 in at all. No good!

I am working hard at picking my fall Half Marathon lineup. In fact, I signed up for my first of the 4 last night...

The Diva Half Marathon on Long Island on Oct 2!
Shelley and I are going to have a girls race weekend together.

My other definite is the Hartford Half Marathon on Oct 15 (only 30 min from home!)

Other possibilities?
Seacoast Half in NH Nov 13
Monson, MA Half Marathon Nov 13 (literally 15 min from my house, but hard & hilly)
Manchester, NH Half Nov 6
RaceVermont.com Half in Shelburne, VT Nov 6 (Near Kevin's hometown)

I need to pick 2 more from last list. As of right now, I am leaning toward Monson & Shelburne.
Any input?
I've also been thinking that 9 half in 365 days in 9 states = 4 moon status. After these 4, I'd be at 7... do I dare?

My other dilemma is next weekend's triathlon.

I have not been open water swimming since the triathlon on June 26.
Actually, I have not been swimming at all.
The swim is .5 miles
I have never swam .5 miles
I want to make use of my USAT license
I would also like to save money for all the race fees listed above
I can race either for $85 at the Danskin in Webster, MA or for $95 at the Amica 19.7 in New London, CT
Next weekend is my last long run with Shelley before taper for Providence RnR
I have 2 more triathlon opportunities for the season on Sept 10 & 26

What would you do?

In marathon news, I found the FIRST Marathon training program online HERE, and am excited about training for Disney. The 16 week program, has us starting September 26! It looks like all the fall Half Marathons fall nicely in the plan and would actually add on some extra miles to the training. I really feel like after our 16 miler last weekend, I can accomplish anything. NEVER in a MILLION years when I started running did I think I could run that far. With the longest training run on our schedule at 20 miles, I feel like it is totally doable. I cannot WAIT to run Disney!

My weekend will be quiet, and I'm hoping to be able to rest and get some of that energy back to really focus on my runs in the final weeks leading to Providence. Tonight Kevin and I are having a low key night, and then he will be away on mancation until tuesday. I have to work tomorrow, but I plan on spending the rest of my weekend biking, running, shopping and relaxing by the pool.

Enjoy your weekend!
